Didim was a pre-Greek group of religious people who were living around
the sacred wood and spring. Here Leto gave birth to the twins- Apollo and
Artemis. Didyma was named after Apollo as Apollo in Greek spells as Didymoi.
Didyma is known for its Golden beaches and the Temple of Apollo.
Archaeologists believe that the temple was built in the 8th Century in Didim
after Apollo and the Temple of Artemis was built in Miletus. Both of them
were connected by a road known as the Sacred Way. The entire Sacred Way is
stone paved with statues of recumbent lions and the statues of the priests
of Apollo.
In ancient times the interior of the Temple of Apollo was considered as a
sacred place. There was a secret society made and people use to pay heavy
price and receive the oracles, which were a few words delivered by the
priests there. The Naiskos- the inner sanctuary has the cult and sacred
spring which was used in the oracle. This temple was also used by St.Paul in
the Christian era from where he gave public sermons from the Gospel. The
Temple of Artemis has got fragments of rich decoration including a striking
head of Medusa (she of the hair of snakes) which makes it worth seeing.
In 494 B.C. both the temples were destroyed by the Persians and then these
were rebuilt by Alexander The Great’s orders.
At twenty minutes walking distance from Didim is the famous beach resort
Altinkum. The sparkling blue color water of the beach makes it a worth
seeing. Apart from the spectacular beach Altinkum aqua park, Adaland Aqua
Park, island boat trips and the Ephesus-roman ruins are the other activities
